What Does it Mean?
"Every Child At the Helm" has multiple meanings. For one, we make the safety and well-being of each child in our care our number one priority. Second, we recognize that your child is your priority at all times. If it takes a village to raise a child, TLCA strives to be the deserving community that you can trust and rely on.
Lastly, we believe children learn best when they are loved, respected and appreciated. If children are denied the opportunity to cultivate their self-worth, we know their development will suffer. So, in everything we do, we demonstrate respect for each child’s dignity, value and individuality. We listen to their unique needs and create an environment where children feel well-supported in navigating their social, emotional, physical and intellectual potential. In this way, the child is the captain of his or her development.
What Principles Guide Us Day-to-Day?
Our day-to-day operations are guided by six core beliefs and objectives:
Learning through Play is the cornerstone of our curriculum. Play is how children at a very early age engage and interact with the world. We believe kids learn best by doing, and so our programs focus on purposeful and self-directed play through which children develop creativity, leadership, group skills and overall confidence.
Nurturing Environment is how we make the child feel safe and secure. Prior to being independent, the child must know that he or she can look to an adult for support and that their environment is warm and predictable. We believe the environment is the child’s third teacher. As such, the school’s learning environments were deliberately designed to complement and reinforce the children’s everyday experiences. Nature is also an integral part of our school environment.
Enrichment Programs supplement our regular curriculum. We introduce a variety of activities that are developmentally appropriate yet challenging, fun and adaptive to the needs of each child. Some of these enrichment programs include STEM, second language, physical education and music. Our goal is to expose children to diverse subjects so that they may develop varied interests and skills that they carry on to their school years and beyond.
Dedicated Teachers are our greatest resource and asset. As educators, we are committed to establish every opportunity for children to reach their full and unique potential. The school strives to maintain a teaching community where teachers feel encouraged to become better educators through continuing education, self and on-the-job training and mentorship.
Parents are the child’s first and foremost teachers as well as experts on their children. TLCA recognizes and respects parents’ decisions. We also work closely with parents so that children can receive consistent care and education between home and school.
Community Values of respect, honesty and accountability are TLCA's foundation. The school's programs and curricula, environment and community members may change from time to time, but our adherence to community values remain constant. All members of the community must treat each other as they want to be treated – with respect and honesty. We must also hold ourselves accountable for our personal and professional behavior.
